June’s Ask The Blogger: Bash Harry from Hey Bash

Hello everyone! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m back today for June’s Ask The Blogger with that amazing Bash Harry from Hey Bash. If you don’t know what Ask The Blogger is, each month I’ll interview a new blogger with both questions of my own and questions that you guys have asked. This was originally supposed to be published in May, but both of us had crazy schedules, so here it is now!

1. Hi Bash! Can you tell us a little about yourself and your blog?

Hey! Well, I’m 18 and currently waiting for university in September. I enjoy coffee shops, my house and anywhere with free Wi-Fi. Because that’s where I can access my blog, Hey Bash. Hey Bash is a life-style blog mostly focused on beauty with the occasional snippets of little life and attempts to be ‘stylish’ and failing miserably.

2. How did you choose your blog name?

Funny enough, Hey Bash was originally named Bash Says Hey, which was a then-reference to my old Instagram name HeyBash. I changed it when I realised I liked Hey Bash even more. Though I always knew I wanted to keep the blog name simple so I could use it as an umbrella. I didn’t want the blog to be limited to only one genre. Hence it wasn’t aptly named ‘Beauty with Bash’ or ‘Bash The Beauty’ which friends did suggest.

3. What is your favourite thing about blogging?

The ability to educate, even if it’s not what is expected. Though I doubt I’ll talk about quadratic formulas or World War I in my blog, being able to give helpful information is always something I’m fond of. Providing tips, reviews and opinions that can help make informed decisions, whether for makeup or clothes or thoughts. That’s awesome.

4. What is your biggest blogging accomplishment?

I don’t know if I have any big accomplishments per say. Looking through my blog, there are a lot of things I’m proud of, but wouldn’t necessarily consider accomplishments. It’s really re-configuring your goals after every accomplishment. My biggest blogging accomplishment, is having my own website. Which is a small goal, but having a new layout and having my own domain gave me more confidence to blog.

5. What is your go-to nail colour?

I don’t use nail polish at all, it’s been ages since I’ve painted my nails. What can I say? I like going bare.

6. You have both a blog and a YouTube channel, are there any similarities between the two?

I’ve only started doing YouTube videos for a few months, compared to blogging, which is about two years or so. Two different mediums but both take a lot of work, and a lot of help to make it right. YouTube definitely has a bigger audience than a blog, but I feel like blogs have a stronger sense of community.

7. How has blogging changed your life (if it has)?

I never thought it would but it did. It changed my public life. People recognise me and ask for pictures. I’m invited to events that I’d usually never attend. People think I’m actually stylish when I prefer dressing in my grandmother’s hand-me-downs. I hope it hasn’t changed my personal life though, I still have the same friends, same young adult struggles I hope won’t be broadcast online. If anything, blogging has taught me to keep close my personal life, despite how small it is.

8. What is your favourite type of post to write?

As much as I love writing reviews and putting on makeup, I love writing discussions and think pieces. If there is a discussion to be made about topics of interest, then I hope I can lend a voice and have others share their own opinion. I think that’s why my personal favourite posts are discussions of beauty and its subjectivity. A happy medium.

9. Have you learned any “life lessons” from blogging?

Perhaps I should but the only thing I can think of, is that blogging taught me to be in the moment. That it shouldn’t be the most valuable thing in my life, and the most valuable things in life shouldn’t be online. Blogging helps create that balance between work and life for me, something I’m always learning.

 10. Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

Just do it. You shouldn’t start thinking you will be automatically great at it, because I wasn’t, still isn’t. Starting off slow, and learning how to improve is how I did it. And you can’t do it unless you start. So just do it.

11. What do you dislike the most about blogging?

The unwarranted stress. Unwarranted critics. Unwarranted comparison. There are great pros to blogging but there are great cons as well. A lot of it, hitting your self-esteem. Perhaps taking a step back helps, but these feelings come around often. You just have to trudge through.

12. What would you say to the people who want to start blogging/youtube channel but are still hesitating?

As I said before, just do it. Acknowledge what is holding you back then proceed with fear. It will go away in time. Everyone feels hesitant when making such a huge step. Just know people are there to help.
I hope that you guys enjoyed the interview and learned some new things about blogging! Definitely check out Bash’s blog if you haven’t already, it’s amazing and inspirational.
